The Night Of The Chicken: Fasnet In Southern Germany

Its that time of year again folks!! That time when everyone searches in their attics or basements for those super creepy (yet expensive) costumes that show the story of their town. As we dust off these costumes the sense of town pride starts to shine through the gray winter skies. I try to compare it to how I feel when I talk about Syracuse. I get the same kind of city pride and it can NOT be broken. Ever.

This year happened to be pretty special for us. Each year a different town hosts the entire weekend festivities for the surrounding towns. Toblerone’s hometown is associated with a completely different circle of towns so we were really excited to find out that not only was our current town hosting it (saving us from having to drive somewhere) but his hometown also got a special invitation to join in this particular festival in our town. Karneval (Fasnet) was going to be AWESOME this year. And that, my friends, it most certainly was. It was great to have everyone come to our house to “pre-game” before the parade.

And just a side note…The costumes for Toblerone’s town are technically Roosters but I call them big Chickens. All the same right?

This year there are a few different costumes than the years before since we were in a different area than previous years. Oh and the witches got me and my friend. They took us…brought us into their “Witches House” which was their float basically and they gave us shots of something strange. But it was definitely fun this year! Better than the years before since the weather is unusually warm and we haven’t had snow since early December so this year was perfect!!

A Laughing Matter, Sort Of.

I recently explained to you the phenomenon of German Music known as Schlager. But I am about to share with you the ultimate phenomenon. The man that puts all other Schlager singers to SHAME! Thats right, to shame. He’s a hairy beast (stay with me on this) who really drives home the “flower power” statement. He is…..the great….the incredible….the hairy……..

DIETER THOMAS KUHN!!!!!!!!

Ok….I know, you’re not nearly as excited as I am when I say that but this guy is crazy weird. He has this cult following that is scary actually but I give in to it just because it’s so strange and SO bizarre! I first went to his concert last year and his concerts sell out pretty quickly. Upon arriving to the concert people were dressed in strange outfits, wigs, and bright neon colors and 95% of the people were holding sunflowers. Apparently, this guy loves sunflowers?!?! Anywho, before I go any further….this is the one and only Dieter:
SetWidth445-Dieter-Thomas-Kuhn

Please tell me you’re as scared as I am… Oh wait, I found a better image….THIS should really get your loins moving.
17394087

Ahhh yes….the faint scream of terrified readers. What a joyous sound! Well, his music is just that much better! This year we went to a concert in Rottweil (yes, a town with it’s own mascot, The Rottweiler.) And although we don’t really go so much for the music, we do go for the drinking and the weird costumes. Ours were pretty awesome too for a last minute put together kind of deal. What do ya think?!
IMG_6195
IMG_6194

The music is of course about happiness and love and Dieter kind of puts a swig of “Salsa” in there. A little spanish twist, if you will. But the crowd loves him and they go totally crazy when he comes out to sing! I sneakily took a few pictures of some others around us and their outfits. Everyone comes dressed up as hippies so it’s kind of funny to see all these Germans walking around dressed like they missed Woodstock.

IMG_6197IMG_6203

The thing about Dieter Thomas Kuhn is that he was very big back in the day and he was well known for his hair…that beautiful curled under hair. (OMG!) and the best part of it all…he wears a chest toupee!! YES! As if you couldnt really tell from the pictures above, but it’s true. Some fans even wear the same toupee to his concerts to show their appreciation for his Royal Hairiness!
IMG_6209

Of course, I wouldn’t leave you without letting you hear some of his music so I will leave you with this joyous video and let you decide…is he for real or is he just a joke?

Fasching Time Again

232323232fp73494_nu=3255_25;_266_WSNRCG=389439926432_nu0mrj

The only thing I can think of to describe what Fashing is probably would be similar to Halloween with a bunch of drunks putting on a circus show. The one thing that is really cool is there is an ‘assigned’ costume to each town based on that towns history or back story. Toblerone’s town costume is the Rooster!

232323232fp54398_nu=3255_25;_266_WSNRCG=389438_7__32_nu0mrj

Last year was my first Fashing or “Carnival” and it was an incredible experience. Three…very long days…of drinking and dancing in a chicken costume. If you missed the experience last year, please click here to go read about it.

This year I was dreadfully ill but managed to make it out for the small parade and see the giant tree get put up. This tree is also similar to the May tree (Mai Baum) and the one they place for Christmas too but it was fun to watch them put this up as if we were in the 1500s. Very old school but keeping with tradition. My most cherished memories so far in Germany are those I’ve spent relishing in their traditional and stripped down holidays. Sadly, the US is much too commercialized and I’m really loving this easy paced life that doesn’t have much to do with money and such. But THAT, my friends, is a topic for another day!

232323232fp543_3_nu=3894_6_3_749_29856_383_239ot1lsi

So, we watched the mini parade, people handed me drinks of champagne and schnapps as they passed by, and the costumes were sweet and creative. For the parade, the different clubs (Music, Dance, Sport, etc) picked a theme or costume that is outside of the usual “Rooster.” Take a peak at a few!

2nd Annual Halloween Party

It came and went once again! Last year we decided to show the Germans how Halloween should be celebrated so we held a mandatory costume party! We invited maybe 8 people. Then this year we decided to invite everyone!

There were two great parts to this Halloween…1. My mom was still in town from the wedding and would get to meet the people that are in my life. 2. This was our surprise wedding party following our civil service wedding we had that morning. So everyone who came had no idea that we got married! Once everyone arrived, we gave a little speech followed by cheering and congratulations all around!

It really went perfectly this year! We had around 25 people and they were dancing, in the jacuzzi, and downing Jell-O shots like Americans! I was so proud! Everyone came in costume and that made it more fun! We had drinks galore, pumpkin soup, chili, and loads of goodies my mom helped me get done! She’s a saint!! Thanks again momma!!

There is one stark difference between Halloween in the US and Halloween in Germany. In the US the girls dress a bit skanky usually and the men dress crude, and creative but inappropriate. In Germany, everyone is dressed scary and if they aren’t, then appropriate lengths on dresses, etc. Totally opposite! But fun nonetheless!

This year we had 5…count them…5 trick or treaters. The kids held small glowing pumpkins and sang a song. Once they were finished they would take money or candy. So cute and I was so excited to finally get kids!!!

Hope you all had a wonderful Halloween and are now prepping for Turkey Day! My first one out of the states…and I’m hosting! (Aka stress-mania!!!)

Until next time, Readers!!!! Xoxoxoxoxoxo

It’s Be-A-Crazy-German Day During Fasnet!

Well…I’m alive…and that is all that matters right?

It all started last weekend with a 3 day festival celebrating the culture and the traditions of each town.  There is a great website that I found that explains what each town’s costume means and the story behind the founding of this however it is in German and a bit spotty once translated to English.  The website is here and if you feel up to it, translate and see what it’s all about but more so, check out the costumes for each town. There are only a few towns on this page but these are all within the same area/region that we live in.

I was part of Toblerone’s hometown which is called Renquishausen. For them, the traditional garb is the suit of a Rooster and there are also women costumes which are of old maids that carry baskets full of eggs (or shots of liquor!). I was a Rooster this year but opted out of the terrifying mask – see below! I’m not quite sure why all of the masks from each town is so frightening! Some are really scary!!!

The story behind the Rooster costume goes back to the 1800’s where the men of this town would breed their roosters and be able to supply easily to Nobels and others.  Somewhere along the line there was a famine and their stock was wiped out clean. This becoming the crescent for their town and the story behind the costumes!

The 3 day party was crazy fun but mostly, I LOVED the parade. There were more than 40 towns (over 4,000 people) that joined in this parade and then went to party hardy in a giant tent afterwards. Check out some of the pictures in my slideshow below and let me know what you think!! They have some crazy imaginations! For each town there is the band, the dancers (which are dressed like cowgirls), the town crescent costume, and the old maid/witch costume.

This weekend is continuing with mamy celebrations but in everyone’s individual town. This is the time when people will come around dressed up in costumes (any costumes of their choice) and never show their faces and talk in weird voices. They will push you out of the way and go inside your house and drink your alcohol! This happened to us last year when a swarm of bees and beekeepers came into the house and forced us to drink honey liquor! (ok ok…the real truth…I wasn’t forced!)  Actually, see a picture for yourself from last year. I had been in the house for maybe 5 days so the place was a wreck and boxes were everywhere as I had just arrived!

Also this weekend each town has a giant fire and this symbolizes the old tradition of burning a witch and leaving behind winter. The welcoming of Spring!

Enjoy the Freak Show!!! :-))) (Note: I was drunk-ish and standing facing directly into the sun because it was -20 below so the pics are a little light, sorry!)

30 Day Blog Challenge – Day 16

Day 16-  Photos of yourself 2 years ago

In South Beach, Miami for New Years 2008-2009…hanging out with my best friend (wife), super fun french guys and an Aston Martin. Nothing was more fun then my pink fluff of a dress.  I have no where to wear it to now but what a good night that was. I saved a girl from death in the bathroom climbing under the bathroom stall  (in my dress!!!) sliding on the floor to save her. She was completely passed out…I’m sure alcohol poisoning and was completely unconscious! It was crazy! Then I danced until 6 in the morning. Absolutely amazing night…I’ll never forget it! 🙂  So this pic was from my first day in 2009, I wish I could do it all over again! There’s always drama on New Years for most but the wife and I managed to just say, “whatevs” to the drama and had a great time..heck…a great week!

On December 5th, 2009 – the most beautiful nephew in the world was born!! MY nephew! A first for my family and we were SO excited! He was the most perfect burrito baby I ever did see. Now he’s so big with blond curly hair (almost two!!) There is no words to describe the love I felt for him when I first saw him.

So, I’m known as the weird one.The loud and obnoxious one, always trying to be the jokester. Here we are on Christmas day at my Grandparents house…found a decorative little penguin and there starts the wacky girl that I am. X-mas always makes me a little funny – full of eggnog, chocolate, and cookies, I’m bound for destruction! I’m just glad my family hasn’t disowned me yet!

I have hot friends. That’s all I will say about that for now…more on that later. This was Halloween, I’m on the right there making my best “duck-face” and two of my besties. I was a Ballerina that year with my friend Roblet, which was super exciting for me. I LOVED being a ballerina! I’ve always wanted to be one and what better time to do that then at Halloween! 🙂  What was the best costume you ever wore for Halloween?
