Let The Renovations Begin!

Maybe it has something to do with the winter time and the fact that I want to be inside…ALL.DAY.LONG. The bug to change the world has hit me…or actually maybe starting a bit smaller is key and that has led me to begin renovations on my home!

As you know I completed the guest rooms minus a few decorating items but at least those two rooms are done and the doors stay closed until people come to visit (hint, hint!) On to the bigger projects where I actually have to focus and take my time because these are the rooms that people actually see a lot more.

First up is the living room!! Pinterest inspiration struck again and I decided with this house I really need to stay in-tune with myself and my style. I am a “coastal” girl and I should just allow that to happen! Light blues, creams, and seashells galore! Gotta bring a little bit of the ocean into my mid-west life here. Thankfully, the German husband of mine is just cool with whatever I do! 🙂

So I saw this picture on Pinterest which you can find it’s original place on the House Of Turquoise Blog here. 1067883302_oXKVM-OThis is the idea! And although I can’t exactly do it JUST like that it was a great start for inspiration!

Previous walls in the living room were in my opinion dark blue. Nothing wrong with dark colors, it just started to depress me. There is only one large window and two smaller ones in this room. Not a whole lot of natural light pouring through so it was important to me that we lighten it up…A LOT!

I fought with the idea of paint colors and finally landed on THE color. Glass Slipper by Benjamin Moore. I spent hours searching for the right color but every one of them was either too “baby blue” or “too dark.” This color by Benjamin Moore has a hint of green in it so its not going to give you that newborn baby room look.

So all in all it took me to do the entire room in about a week! I know, that seems insane but first, I was all by my little self doing this. I had to take SO many breaks because I also have dog duty and other house duties to attend to. On top of that, I’m scared of heights so being on a ladder was just REALLY challenging for me!

End result – Exhibit A:

Collage 1Collage 2Harley loves his new space 🙂 He’s going to be 5 tomorrow! Everyone say Happy Birthday to this sweet, cupcake!

End Result – Exhibit B

So as you can see this simple change turned the room into something different. I actually like to sit in there all day now. No…wait, I actually don’t sit around all day. I’m off doing very productive things because that is what housewives do! 🙂

I painted the panel above the fireplace white because I’m having a hard enough time figuring out what to put there. A picture? A clock? An abstract piece of art? A canvas print? It’s not easy! But at least it doesn’t look like its a focal point anymore. So maybe whatever goes there won’t be THAT important.

Also, I painted ALL of the molding…ALL of it.  I couldn’t bare the thought of trying to scrub out all the crayon marks, old pizza, and several other questionable substances I found in my journey.  Another reason why I shouldn’t have children…my OCD does not allow for ANY messes! But doing that simple little thing made this room look like it was just built. Almost. It gave it all a bit of much needed makeover and I’m feeling complete!

Next up: DECORATING!! Will be added a bit of greenery, end tables, lamps, curtains and something for those shelves and above the mantel. Its all getting there! Slowly but surely!

Then on to: DINING ROOM/KITCHEN! Will be adding backsplash, brightening it up as well, and re-staining the cabinets! Wish me luck!

Anyone have any ideas for the space above the mantel? Would love to hear what you got!!!

Until next time, Readers!!!! xoxoxoxoxo

The Finished Garden – FINALLY

As you all know from my previous posts that our yard was in the process of being overhauled! It’s complete now and I’m prepared to show you the aftermath. (I was waiting for the grass to grow.) So, don’t be shocked when you see how small our yard is…everyone here says it’s really big, which at that time I laugh in their faces and tell them the tale of living in America with acres of land to play in. However, we will make it work for us! I’m still trying to find a lilac tree here but no luck ;-(

Let the games begin. Enjoy the slideshow of “Before and After” pics. And then I expect to have all your comments/ideas on how to accomplish my English garden. I’ve bought loads of bulbs to plant from all sorts of flowers which will start going in the ground once it begins to cool down here.

I can say though that I’m SO glad this is finished. Now we just need to get our outside furniture and put up a fence (so our nosey neighbors can’t watch us from their windows anymore) and off we go!

A Writer’s Heaven

Finally….a place for me to sit and do what I LOVE to do most! 🙂 AN OFFICE!!!

I know I’ve been talking about this for months and how excited I am to show you guys. It’s still not 100% yet but I’m working with the small space. Got the furniture bits in there and now it’s time for all the decorations/plants/etc. So…Here it goes!

After much discussion I decided to go with dark gray walls and white furniture. Seems to be “in” for the moment so I went with it! Funniest bit was I worked forever on painting this room. First coat didn’t really dry as dark as I wanted but I was ok with it. Went back to the store to get more paint, started painting and found they were two totally different colors. The girl who mixed the paint the first time around completely gave me the wrong shade of gray. THANK YOU, MORON! So, I decided to leave the largest wall as the lighter gray and the rest as the dark gray….and this is what we have!

Walking into the office you see (right side wall is lighter gray)

Then we have the cubed bookshelf. It’s my stock of English books! 🙂 And a few of Toblerone’s. I told myself I would go back and read all of these again. Doesn’t hurt! I definitely need to add to it though, no empty spaces!!!

This picture is amazing. Everything old is what I want in this room and this is a scene of NYC in 1932. Not sure you can see it so good because of the glare (SORRY!) but the harbor is missing quite a few buildings and this is long before World Trade Center was built. Back before all the terror and Prohibition was just ending. Just a great piece if you ask me!:

And of course this is my favorite part so far. Right now there are pictures of my grandparents and family – all B&W pics of course. It was these pictures that gave me the idea for the room so I went with it. I felt I needed a special place for them to be displayed. Soon this will be overflowing with them and from Toblerone’s grandparents too. Just have to make the copies but it will be all different sized frames all overlapping one another…chaotic…because that’s what family is. A whole lot of love and chaos and in this case – a mix of cultures and memories:

So, that’s what I have so far. I’ll be adding more vegetation to the room to add some color to it but for now it’s my little hole in the house. It’s my sanctuary to write and have peace of mind. It may not be anyone else’s Heaven but for me…it does the trick as far as inspiration goes.

Let me know what you think and what ideas you have for other decorations to liven it up a bit!

Until next time, Readers!!!! xoxoxoxoxo

30 Day Blog Challenge – Day 14

Day 14- Seven things that cross your mind a lot

1. The Future of Facebook

It’s common while I’m stalking others on facebook I think about how we had new profile pictures and new albums of pictures from mini-vacations or new babies. Yet, here in lies the situation. Let’s say in 20 years, facebook is still cool and happening…are people going to leave up the pictures of themselves from 20 years before? The younger, sexier body, better dressed? I mean…what a comparison…You have the hot guy from your 4th grade class who grew up to be even hotter now and is sporting a 6 pack or maybe it’s an 8 pack. Then in 20 years…he has a new photo up. Of him holding his 5 year old and his 6 pack is now gone and replaced by cake, spare ribs, and beer. I have been on facebook for several years now and looking back at my first profile pic compared to now…there is already a massive change. I look old as hell compared to my younger, cuter face back then!

2. Why bother cleaning?

You ever notice that when you spend all day doing laundry, cleaning the floors – mopping included, dusting, wiping down counters, changing the sheets on your bed, and every other thing you do to make your house glisten. Then your family comes tramping in and it’s all a mess before you can blink your eyes. Milk is spilled on the clean floor, dog hair is EVERYWHERE, Food crumbs reappear on the counters, and the nicely made bed is now in a crumbled mess. Someone tell me why this happens? Why it’s only the person who cleans all the time that tries to keep everything clean. This drives me crazy and I CONSTANTLY think about this.

3. Wed-Me-Not

I’m obsessed with weddings and always looking at the dresses and how people do things, what colors they choose and yaddy yadda. Sometimes I’m super nosey and I’m only interested in the details, I don’t want to steal ideas! Just an FYI if you’re ever asked by me. I’ve had my wedding planned for much too long and know exactly how I want them (yes them…I’m having two.) But, there comes a time when I think people need to be shot. Neon colors for a wedding? Or short mini skirts? Or maybe it’s the camouflage wedding. Kill me now.

Why be gross? Why? I wish class grew on trees. I would hand it out like it’s candy! Damn rednecks!! They just annoy me! And, I absolutely can NOT stand people who wear jeans to a wedding. Were you raised in a cave, you moron? Just don’t…don’t breathe, don’t live. Don’t do anything. Just disperse! Sorry – a little hasty but I really have an issue with disgusting people and their terrible judgement. You can see more of these funny pictures here.

4. Bye Bye Blockbuster

Ever since Red Box and Netflix were invented….Blockbuster and all those other fun places are going out of business. I used to LOVE going to the movie store, especially with my girl friends before a girly sleepover. As soon as I walked in I would just be overwhelmed by all the choices and would scan the new releases twice. Round one, I would think about it, round two I would make my decision. Now, it’s as easy as a click of a button and that takes away from the excitement of it all. I think making the rental of a movie so easy is unnecessary. Too much technology – making life WAY too comfortable and easy while taking the fun out of it.

5. Harley Says

Do you ever wonder what your dog is thinking? And if he could talk…what exactly would he say? Toblerone and I make up voices for Harley and talk for him (weirdos) but I wish he was blessed with vocal chords so we could have a chit chat every now and then. I wonder if he would ask for tea instead of water….or a crumpet instead of a dog bone. Would he talk politics or the latest hottie on the street? Would he use swear words or have a sweet little kid voice (after all – he’s only 17 months!)  For now, he’s my mute of a dog and I love him more than anything!

6. Why is my sweater there?

I’m also so shocked to wake up and find the clothes I went to bed in to be all over the place. What really surprises me is not knowing how they got there. In normal day time hours when I’m trying to pull a sweater over my head I always get my ears stuck or end up with static hair all over my face. So what boggles my mind is how I manage to do this and fix myself back into sleeping mode without so much as waking up fully. I mean, really? Do I somehow have noddle arms in my sleep so my sweater just falls right off? And is my hair wet so that doesn’t move an inch either? What in the world?! I’m just struck my this and every morning I wake up and I see my PJ’s on the floor or under my covers somewhere I start to question myself. Or maybe I should question Toblerone? Just sayin.

7. What’s Next?

I am always trying to plan my next move. Where will I be in 5 years? In Germany still? Or maybe back in the US. Australia perhaps? Hanging out with the Dingos! I usually don’t stay in one place very long…only in Maine and NY have I been in one spot for more than 3 years. I have the travel bug in me and I need to constantly be stimulating my brain with new sites and new culture, new people, new faces, new food. You get the idea.

UPDATE: The garden is superb!! They started laying down some of the 8 billion stones we received and it’s starting to look like a backyard! I’m so excited!! And when I say “Garden” I mean the whole yard. Here in Germany they call the whole yard a “garden.”  So, things are going well and they are moving along fast! They’ve only been at it for 5 days now and the stones in the Jacuzzi area are all placed and the walkway has begun! TA DA!!!  I’ll keep you posted on more news and more pictures are to be coming too!! :-)))

Until next time, Readers!!! xoxoxoxoxo

30 Day Blog Challenge – Day 10

Day 10- Songs you listen to when you are Happy, Sad, Bored, Hyped, Mad

Ahh….only 20 more days to go. This is starting to get on my nerves, no joke! I’m walking around and concerned that I won’t have enough time to write my day blog. A challenge I refuse to fail! So I’ve been trying to get myself ahead of the game here and write one or two a day in advance when I have inspiration. Or at the very least start it!

A quick update: Are garden/yard is very much underway and only after 3 days in and it’s going very fast! Also, as you may know the houses here are built close to one another. Currently on the side of the house with all the action is next to a piece of land, owned by someone, but no house. The old hags that own it are ruthless. Every week they meticulously place grass and what have you in certain places to make the grass look perfect. Once Harley had pooped in their yard (yes…I let him) and the next day or so there were signs up in this yard saying that this was not a dog’s toilet and to stop or they will call the police. Interesting. So…This is the ONLY way to get into our back yard with the giant machines they are using and what not so we had to use their yard. Just a reminder: THERE IS NO HOUSE. It’s just a piece of land for nothing!!!!  He showed up yesterday and let us have it! lol. I went storming outside, slamming doors, and half letting Harley run out and knock the dude over. I rolled my eyes and put my hands on my hips and said things in English that everyone is probably better off not understanding. All is ok, as long as we put their yard back to tip top shape afterwards. Remind me to bring them homemade jam with a taste of arsenic in it.

Moving on, Here we are with today’s topic! Cheers!

30 Day Blog Challenge – Day 1

Day 01- A recent picture of you and 10 interesting facts about yourself

There ya have me….in my glory at 8am in the morning! That reminds me, I still need to brush my teeth!  🙂  So as promised I told you I would do a 30 day blog challenge with a new topic every day. Here’s the thing…I broke a piece of that promise because I said I would start last Wednesday or Thursday as to which I didn’t!  Fail on my behalf! So without further ado…let the games begin!! Topic today as shown above is a recent pic of myself (taken fresh two hours ago today) and 10 facts about myself!

1. I’m a war buff in a not-all-knowing kind of way. I could watch war movies all day every day. I’m not sure what the appeal was but my Dad always had this interest in the Civil War and growing up in Maryland I had the connection there. Gettysburg is a fantastic movie, My top 5 favorites along with Tombstone. Great stuff there people! If you asked me when the Civil war was or specific details I wouldn’t know that, lol. I know…blondie!

2. I realized I’m a daughter of the sea. I ache to be near the ocean every day. Especially now that I’m in Germany where the ocean is approximately 6 hours away from me. It’s painful. Last year we were in Cape Cod and on our last day, we went for a quick walk down the beach and on our way back, I stopped for a moment and took it all in. I can remember so clearly now – the smell, the way the waves washed up. The entire scene plays again and again in my head. I hold onto that memory so tightly careful not to let it escape me. And with that, I’m able to live in these mountains….for now.

3.  I’m a writer, not just a blogger. Like a real one or rather I hope to be one. Funny story actually how that came about. I’ve been writing in journals since I was really young, maybe 8 or 9 and one day my Mammaw Pearl saw me writing in my journal and told me she had always thought I would become a writer. Back then I thought she couldn’t be more wrong about me, however, a few years went by and after I started to find myself the dream of becoming an actress or somewhere in the fashion industry dwindled just as quickly as I realized that my creativity was meant for a pen and paper. I’ve been working on a book and slow as it is coming I’m excited to finish it. Whether it goes somewhere or not, the fact that I have this finished is all I want.

4. Following in the creativity suit, I also play piano…not very well and not nearly as well as my 17 year old sister who is a phenomenon as it is. I write music though, nowhere near a Billboard award but it’s a great way to get out all that pent up nonsense inside. I don’t have a piano here and I miss the piano at my mom’s house. That’s been in our family for ages and certainly got it’s use over the many years it’s been around. Maybe someday I’ll buy a piano for this house, until then I’m thinking about breaking into the church and playing there.

5. I’m a damn good cook. End of story! Ha, just kidding. I never had to cook for anyone before and once I met Toblerone I actually was excited to throw myself into it and start learning. I followed recipes step by step and figured it out. It was really fun (and starting to become expensive) but I never made something that came out tasting like garbage can or looking like  frog skin, so I’m lucky there. I think my mom and dad definitely gave me the cooking gene. A combination of awesomeness! Baking I learned from my mom but I can’t say that I’m any good at it. I’m ok, but not enough to gloat about it! Recently, I tried to make Linzer cookies…major major fail.

6. I am terrified of needles but only the kind that takes away my blood. When it comes to getting a shot, it’s easy breezy for me. It’s something about where they put the needles and how exposed your arm is. I mean, why does it have to be on the inside of your elbow? What is that?!?! I guess no matter where they put it it won’t help my situation. Thus being the second problem. I would love to be a doctor…or even a nurse however, I would NEVER be able to take someones blood or insert an IV. I’ve been thinking a lot about it and I’m considering hypnosis so I can get over it and start poking people. Who’s with me? Looking at blood is no problem, touching blood…also no problem but it’s the act of actually inflicting pain and pushing through skin that bothers me. I would never be a good serial killer.

7. I have way too many clothes and shoes. And now, most of them I never wear. In my closet everything is color coded. It’s easier for me to find what I’m looking for that way. Only thing thats not is all my dresses. I have way too many to count and they are color coded by themselves in their own section. I know…I’m either just weird or OCD. Not sure which yet!

8. I live by the seam of my pants. I’m never really 100% sure about anything but I do it anyway. When I was in the decision making process of whether to move to Germany or not, in all truth. I didn’t think about it. I mean…yes I thought about it but didn’t really THINK about it. I figured, go…see how it works and if it doesn’t work, worse case is you got to see another culture and you have to come home. Big whoop right? Yeah, then when I got here and realized how much stuff I brought with me….no just kidding. Once I got here, I kind of just went with the flow. Wasn’t sure what was going on half the time and moved around on autopilot. It’s setting in a little bit now (5 months later) but I’m still not too homesick. Nothing that isn’t manageable I suppose. So – it was a good decision nonetheless and I’m lucky I’m surrounded by great people here.

9. Somedays I wish I walked out of a black and white film – a musical to be exact. Judy Garland as my sidekick and Fred Estaire as my dancing partner…Frankie Boy (Sinatra) my one love affair…oh to dream! Musicals and old movies developed me. Of course, giving me a false idea of how love is – nowadays it’s way harsh! However, this starts my love affair of black and white pictures…I can’t get enough of them. I have a few copies I made from my grandparents and these pictures are incredible. How can you explain your young grandfather sitting on a ledge with his straw hat, a fishing pole made of wood, and an old tin can filled with worms? Or your grandma, sitting in a chair with her one leg propped holding onto her dolly with the sweetest smile on her face. (You can see the pictures here). Amazing. Really. Now you can just snap pictures in a heartbeat with your phone or digital camera. It’s not the same anymore. I’m sure had I known what it was like, I would be missing the simpler times.

10. I love love love to read. I remember being younger and if me and my friends saw anyone reading, they were immediately dubbed – NERD!!!! And now, I’m ready to take the heat. Yup, I love to read…and I’m a nerd. How’s them apples? I never really have time to read but I’ve been trying to fit in a few minutes before bed. Trying to keep my mind sharp and it doesn’t hurt that there are usually small selections of English books in the bookstores here. THANK YOU GERMANY! I would go crazy!

SO – this concludes day one. I know, it’s not the normal stuff I write about but this will just have to do!

Until next time, readers (which is tomorrow!) xoxoxoxoxo

An Update From Germany

Let’s see, where to begin.

1.) Our Garden situation. Ha. I realized there is no possible way for me to write this in a nice way. The company that was supposed to come JULY 1st (!!!!!!!!!!!) obviously did not. It’s been 17 days and during those 17 days we had a heck of a time trying to get in touch with the owner of the company. He screened our calls, didn’t return messages. We turned on “stalker mode” and called 4 or 5 times a day. Finally, a not-knowing secretary answers the office phone and gives us the dudes mobile phone number. HA! I’VE GOT YOU NOW, SUCKER!

Well, he fed us a million excuses as he choked on his words in fear. Saying that one of the workers was out due to a sick father, another worker had some other ridiculous thing like he lost a leg in a bread cutting accident. Who knows. Needless to say, the dude said he would call us on Friday (that was two days ago) with a full report and a date of when he would be able to start. I’m sure you guessed it, he didn’t call. I’ve decided every day he goes without calling or starting, I’m knocking off 500 Euro from the contract of 21,700 Euro. At this point, he’s down to 15,000 Euro. I hate unreliable people. It’s not my thing. Either way, it needs to be done by August 27th because I’m throwing a big party here and I promised people the jacuzzi would be up and running. And it will be – god willing!

2.) My language classes – you know the one that is for a year, 25 hours a week, 5 hours a day, every day – will start in the beginning of September when the school holiday is over. I thought I was looking forward to it and a bit of me is, however, it’s just an awful long time to be in a classroom when I have enough to do at home. I mean, seriously, I would rather be cleaning or something like that. (I have housewife syndrome!)

3.) Because of the undisclosed reason that is keeping me quite busy lately I’ve decided that since I won’t be traveling much (our trip to the US has been cancelled for now due to this as well) I will do a typical 30 day Blog challenge. Why not? Get to know the sugar behind the spice, ay? So it’s a new topic, every day for 30 days. I may change a few of them because I think they are ridiculous.  I will start this next week I think on Wednesday or Thursday probably and go from there. I regret to say that the majority of my blogs for possibly the next 6-8 weeks won’t all be about Germany and all the sites and crazy ways of the Germs, but I want to give you something! So, like it or not, thats what you’re gettin! 🙂

4.) I’ve decided to ask around and find the best and easiest way to make an Erdbeerkuchen  directly from a German because I have a lot of traffic checking out my blog on the matter in which I didn’t get into specifics. I only threw around my frustration with reading directions in German and took pictures. So, that will be coming soon as well!

5.) I’ve been dying to show you guys the outcome of the office here but it’s not entirely finished. “We’ve only just begunnnnn.” (Singing the Carpenters in my head) The painting is done and all that but I really didn’t want to show you guys until all the pictures were on the wall and we had shelving and what not. We have a desk, a chair, a rug, and the rest is boxes of books that need a home! I may show you the before and during. At a later date you get the “After and completed pictures.”

6.) I’ve decided to find some sort of Blog Ads – brings in more traffic and the like. Anyone have any good suggestions? Ones that are free would be better obviously! 🙂 This would also motivate me to write more if I knew I had people coming to the site!

Thats the update for now. I’ll be writing more later. I PROMISE this time!

Until next time, readers!! xoxoxoxoxo

Wedding Bells Are Ringing

Sorry for the slacking on the blog, friends. I have been crazy busy and I just found a moment to write.

Once again we had a long vacation weekend. These Germans LOVE their vacation…you know with the whole 4 weeks they get off during the summer and then plus all the holidays. Ridic!

So we had a BBQ at the sister-in-laws house (total of 6 people) where we enjoyed way too much. We had everything from steak (fresh from her uncle’s farm…), two different kinds of chicken, sausages galore, etc etc. Plus three different kinds of salad  – Green, Pasta, and Potato. Lets just say I think our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. It was great though…afterwards we sat around and played a drinking game – a German one….in German of course. Nothing compared to “Kings” or “Down The River” – I love those games but will have to wait until next time to show them!!

It’s been so warm here and I can say that even for my pale freckled Irish skin, I have the gleaming bits of a tan coming on. (Yes I wear sunscreen…apply 65SPF  approximately every 20 mins.) We went to a wedding on Saturday, my first one which was beautiful but some things were different then how I would have done them. So, lets back up and let me explain how it works here. Typically, the idea of the wedding (church, recepetion, etc) is similar so it’s not terribly different but they do invite people from their hometown that are of the same age. So, we were invited because Toblerone went to school with the groom and they are the same age. As well as about 4 or 5 other guys that were with us. There are literally specific invitations with your birth year on them and everyone has to check yes or no if they will be attending. I don’t think for my wedding in the US I would be inviting anyone who is the same age. Thats too many people and I don’t even like half of them!

Culturally, they don’t have “engagement” rings like we know them in the states. You know, the glitz, the bling bling etc. Here it looks similar to a wedding band normally and thats the ring. This option is not for me. I expect the glistening diamond shining and blinding me and everyone else in the eyes. Thats just my stand on the matter.

So the wedding begins in a beautiful church somewhere along the Lake of Konstanz. The Groom greeted everyone outside and then told us all to go in as it got close to the wedding starting. As we sit the music starts and in walks the bride and groom hand-in-hand down the aisle together. Each have one friend as their maid of honor and best man. Thats another thing…it’s not normal to have more than one person in your bridal party. Wait until the Germs get a taste of how I’m going to do it. And, walking down the aisle together at the beginning? I don’t like that. There is so much to say about the man waiting for his bride to come and the first moment he sees her in front of everyone! I always watch the groom, it’s the greatest moment ever!

For a Catholic wedding it was quite quick though, I think it was 47 minutes and we were counting on an hour or two. It wasn’t all that bad if you didn’t consider the Disney songs they had two German girls sing. There were 4 songs in total. Interesting selection. We had Lion King’s “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” and also something from Mulan I think? I have no idea. Anyways, moving on.

Then from the church we walk to another building for champagne and some snacks (which went VERY fast with the amount of people that were there.) We said congrats to the bride and groom and sat down. I of course had the man coming around filling up the glasses just leave a bottle with me. Yes, this is how I do it. I mean, what do you expect…I’m around people speaking too much German, I’m bored, and I want to drink – to celebrate of course!

Moving on, so now we have to pack up in our cars and drive another 20 minutes away – with no directions – to a parking lot. Then we walk from there for 15 minutes down to the port and wait for a boat. On this boat we are to enjoy coffee and cake. No we’re not….I’m to enjoy oodles of wine, thank you very much.  So, it’s hot out…we have to go all over creation and I’m in 5 inch stilettos. I bet you can sense my happiness. Let me remind you that Germany has cobblestone roads and uneven stones everywhere….yes, try this in heels in the sweltering heat.

Anywho, the boat was a nice idea though. Perfect day however they didn’t have enough places for everyone to sit….and the service sucked. Other than that, it was ok. It was a two and a half hour ride on the lake going past Austria, Switzerland, and of course Germany. About 2 hours too long on the boat if you ask me. It doesn’t take long for people to consume coffee and cake. So, we of course found a bar and went from there!!!

At the end of the boat ride we said goodbye to the happy couple and as half of the people went to a Hotel about 10 minutes away from there (lots of traveling I would say…) for the reception, the other half of us headed back to our cars to call it a day. So normally here they invite only a handful of people to join in the dancing/dinner/etc. I’m not sure if thats normal in the states but I’m pretty sure that whoever is coming to my wedding will be there for the whole thing, beginning to end. And we won’t be traveling all over creation to do this. Literally 4 different venues for small little things is not that enjoyable for those of us who traveled far from home or in heels. ANYWAYS. Moving on.

Toblerone and I were obviously hungry by this point since the wedding started at 11am ( we had to leave our house by 8:30am) and it was now 5pm. He found this GORGEOUS spot up from the water in this beautiful restaurant. The food was great, the view was fantastic, AND a wedding was going on in the courtyard and a DJ was just setting up in the dining area so I got really excited and I’m KIND of hoping Toblerone chooses this for the wedding spot. (HINT HINT!)

What have I learned from this weekend’s experience? To be more open to other cultures and their traditions. Granted, I wasn’t sold on the whole wedding and I’ve never been to a wedding I didn’t like. I figured it had to do with the differences of how we do it in the US. Although they were slight…it was hard for me all the same. Also, Don’t make people travel to 8 million places!! It’s inconvenient and the whole time, every one was complaining about this. So, this wasn’t just me…it was everyone. However, the important thing was that the bride and groom were happy and they were. Their special day was just that…special.

Since I will be having two weddings – One in Germany, the other in the US…I’m open to traditions and cultural differences. I’m also open to having two dresses… 🙂

In other news…we found a landscaper!!!! We’re shelling out 21,700 Euro to fix everything to our liking, they will even move the jacuzzi to it’s designated spot! Can’t WAIT! So the 3 or 4 stairs leading down to the platform we want for the jacuzzi cost 2,000 Euro! Ha! What is that?! Stairs are so expensive…who knew! Either way, I’m SO excited! They will start the first week of July and it will take them 3 weeks! So, By the end of July we will have a yard, our garden will be complete. I just need to find some lilac trees and such. 🙂

Oh and also we just booked our tickets for our tour of the East Coast in the US. I can’t WAIT to see all of my family again. And of course stop in NYC, Cape Cod, and Florida for a little R&R…I mean, afterall…it is vacation!!!

Until next time, readers!!!

The Bathroom Of The Gods

It has arrived…it’s been installed….and it’s PERFECT!

And what is this you ask? Of course it’s obvious from the title of the post. OUR BATHROOM – cabinets and mirror!

When we were at the store picking this out it was hard to imagine this in the space we have but now that it’s here and installed…I’m super in love. I want to sit in this room every day…all day and stare at it. This isn’t so traditional and severely modern but I think it’s a good modern. It reminds me of a very expensive hotel bathroom in NYC or Miami.

Without further ado…… I present to you…..the bathroom installment of the gods. But first the Before Pictures:

So it’s great. I don’t care what anyone says about it. I think it’s awesome….because I picked it out!!

After this was installed I then proceeded to head to a Zumba class which was crazy fun and the instructor, although it was in German, was wild and I’m excited to go back and continue doing it! Also, I was registered today as a resident of my town and will now be enrolling in a 25 hour/week German Integration Course. This includes serious language classes and culture classes. I’m very excited about this but now won’t have very much time at home to be a Hausfrau. All the better, this class is important and will ensure that I have the best quality of life here knowing the language and customs of the people.

All in all it was a great day and I’m looking forward to setting up our office now! The desk arrived as well and we now just need to put that together and decorate. Then my writing sanctuary will be complete and I can allow the creative juices to flow!! :-)))

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend! Don’t forget to subscribe to my blog on the right hand side under “Sweet Tooth.” Enter your email address and hit the button!!

Until next time, Readers!!

To Greener Pastures

I wish I paid more attention to my step dad when he was building things or fixing the deck. Or when my mom worked on her vegetable garden or planted flowers. I have a very “beginners” idea to yard work and now I’m realizing I REALLY need to know these things.

Toblerone also has this raw idea of how things are to be done. He understands that these landscaping tasks could be easy, however, he never had to learn them either. So we’re both in the dark. Reminds me of this commerical:

Now, I mentioned that I was going to tell you about the quote for our incredibly wonderful and beautiful yard *sarcasm*

First off though, Here’s one design idea we were given:

So, what exactly are we looking at here? Well the bottom of the page is the front of the yard where my darling rock crate thingys are and the top of the page is the back of the house. It a pretty simple design, I think.  However, I’m not totally sure what the issue is with having grass here but these people are totally against it. Most of the neighboring yards around us are covered in stone. Literally, instead of mulch or flower beds, there are stones. Bunch of crazy people!

I like this design but I don’t appreciate all the stone. Sometimes it’s nice to have grass to lay in or for our pup, Harley to fertilize! Gotta think of these things, people!

What I do like, is this:

The area in the top left is stairs that go down to a platform made specifically for our jacuzzi. I love the idea of having a bit more privacy. I don’t want to sit in my hot tub and give our neighbors another reason to stare at us! The Brady bunch that lives across the street act like Paparazzi. “ohhh look! The American girl is breathing again!”

And for your viewing pleasure, another close up of the front yard.

This is also ok for me, I like the idea of the steps that lead down to the driveway. It’s too high to jump down and it’s annoying that we can to either go back through the house or around the outside of the house to get there.

As for the quote….drum roll please……

………35,000Euro, convert that and you get $50,000……… I know, I know. Contain yourselves. I about jumped off the roof myself. Thats insane. Completely crazy and I don’t know the breakdown yet but from what I understand, the labor cost is the majority of it. It would be done in 2 weeks. This for me is ABSOLUTELY not ok. There is nothing extravagant like a statue of me being carved out of steel and then placed. I mean, HELLO! Where on earth do these people think they can get away with this? Hell no. Not Happening. NO WAY, Olga! Head back to the hills before I get all Crazy American on you!!

So, there you have it folks. We are now looking for cheaper quotes, maybe looking into what we can do ourselves or enlisting the help of knowledgable friends. All of the above.
